Hot Sour Salty Sweet--A Culinary Journey through Southeast Asia by Alford, Jeffrey and Naomi Duguid
This is one of those excellent cookbooks that will obsess you for a while. You'll be scouring Asian food markets in search of obscure ingredients for a t least a couple of weeks. At least, that's what I did and I already had a well-stocked Asian larder. But the ingredient schlepping is worth it when you explore these delicious recipes, which are actually quite quick and easy once you have the ingredients on hand. But try to keep from splattering the pages with nuoc mam, as this is a sumptuously beautiful book that incites me to travel as much as cook!
I'm not sure why I was so out of it for so long, but I just discovered the books of this travelling couple a short time ago, thanks to an article on the in the New Yorker back in November 2008. If you haven't yet encountered the works of Alford and Duguid, you've got an enormous treat in store...
