French garden ornaments

A cloche is a "bell" designed to protect a plant either from cold or from light. This salad cloche is hand-woven in the village of Villaine-les-Rochers, where almost all the inhabitants grow willows and weave baskets from them. It is designed to shade a head of escarole or endive in order to blanch it (turn it pale, creamy yellow), thus rendering it sweet and succulent. The salad cloche is also a splendid garden ornament.

Spray the cloche with a coat of waterproofing before using outdoors.
