This oval hardwood butter mold is from Normandy and dates to the late 1800's. It is hinged at the bottom and the two halves lock together with an iron hook at the top. Fresh butter was packed into the mold and chilled. The mold was then opened to remove the shaped butter, which was inverted to show the decorative design imprinted on its top for attractive table service. The mold is in perfect condition and makes a beautiful decorative object if you're not in the habit of making butter.
