Woundwort (
Stachys officinalis), sometimes know as betony, needs a stage name, for it is a beautifully showy perennial. As its Latin name indicates, it was once an official apothecary's plant, and as the common name indicates, it was used to heal wounds. Today, enjoy its spikes of rosy purple blossoms in your garden or meadow.
Woundwort grows to about 2 feet and forms neat clumps with attractively crinkled foliage. It blooms from early to late summer, and the blossoms attract butterflies. The color is attractively clear and bright.
Plant betony in full sun to part shade in reasonably well-drained soil.
