Just as in English, the French common name for this plant and the name for the gummy confection which was originally made with its roots is the same:
guimauve in French; marshmallow (
Althaea officinalis) in English. This medicinal herb and handsome hardy perennial grows 4 to 5 feet high, forming a sort of herbaceous bush that is covered in pale pink flowers from mid to late summer.
Plant marsh mallow in average to wet soil in a sunny to lightly shaded location anytime from spring through early fall.
I've searched for a year to find the right source of French native wildflower seeds to offer you. Here they are! Certified organically grown, these seeds are produced on a family flower farm in the
Massif Central. One hundred percent of the process is artisanal, right down to the seed packets which are decorated with drawings of the content plants by the owner.
