Greater bird's foot trefoil (
Lotus uliginosus)is a perennial hardy to Zone 7 (and warmer parts of Zone 6). It is native to acid, wet soils in France, and is a real asset if such an area exists on your property. Growing about 2 feet high, it blooms with bright yellow pea-like flowers for much of the summer. Greater bird's foot trefoil is a valuable host plant for butterflies and provides food for other wildlife as well. A member of the legume family, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen. Greater brid's foot trefoil will even tolerate areas that flooded intermittently, and thus makes a wonderful companion to
Iris pseudacorus and other wetland species.
Soak the seed overnight before planting in a moist, sunny area. Not recommended for alkaline soils.
