No flower is more symbolic of spring in most of France than the
compagnon rouge, or "red companion," probably so-called because this bright pink campion lines most rural roadways and footpaths. Pink meadow campion (
Silene dioica) blooms for almost three months where springs are long and cool, and for one to two months where summer's heat strikes quickly.
A perennial hardy to Zone 5, pink meadow campion enjoys good drainage and full sun to light shade. Plant it from spring through early fall for bloom the following year. The plant grows 18" to 2' high and bears bright pink 3/4" diameter blossoms in open clusters. Like many seemingly fragile wildflowers, they last over a week in bouquets. Irresistable to butterflies.
I've searched for a year to find the right source of French native wildflower seeds to offer you. Here they are! Certified organically grown, these seeds are produced on a family flower farm in the
Massif Central. One hundred percent of the process is artisanal, right down to the seed packets which are decorated with drawings of the content plants by the owner.
